Lithuania: Farmers to demonstrate in Vilnius Jan. 23-26

Farmers to protest at Government of Lithuania building in Vilnius, Lithuania, Jan. 23-26. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Farmers affiliated with the Council of Agriculture (ZUT) plan to protest at the Government of Lithuania building (11 Gedimino pr.) from Jan. 23-26. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce regulations regarding the restoration of long-term fields, the increase in fuel excise taxes, and the transportation of Russian grain through Lithuania, among other grievances. Organizers estimate that close to 1,000 tractors will drive into Vilnius for the protest.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration site. Transport disruptions are likely on major roads entering and exiting Vilnius on the morning of Jan. 23 and the evening of Jan. 26 as tractors slow traffic on highways. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Government of Lithuania building. Allow additional time and exercise caution if driving on highways in Vilnius on the morning of Jan. 23 or evening Jan. 26. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
