Mexico: Activists plan nationwide protests against insecurity Jan. 21

Activists to stage protests against insecurity across Mexico Jan. 21. Heightened security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists from multiple organizations plan to demonstrate nationwide on Jan. 21. The purpose of the action is to denounce growing insecurity in Mexico. The following gatherings are likely to be among the largest and most disruptive:

  • Mexico City: March from Monumento a la Revolucion to Zocalo at 11:00

  • Guadalajara: Glorieta de los Desaparecidos at 11:00

  • Monterrey: March from Macroplaza to the intersection of Calle 5 de Mayo and Calle Ignacio Zaragoza at 11:00

  • Queretaro City: March from Alameda to Plaza de Armas at 11:00

  • Reynosa: March from Plaza Principal to Puente Internacional Hidalgo at 11:00

Similar protests will take place in various other urban centers across the country. Demonstrations could draw thousands of participants.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near rally sites. Participants could gather outside government buildings and on major thoroughfares. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators become overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Avoid the protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating near impacted areas. Seek alternate routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed the instructions of authorities.
