Mexico: Labor activists to stage protest march in downtown Hermosillo, Sonora, from 10:00 Jan. 21
Labor activists plan to march in Hermosillo, Mexico, from 10:00 Jan. 21. Heightened security, transport and business disruptions likely.
Unionized workers affiliated with the Confederation of Mexican Workers (Confederacion de Trabajadores de Mexico, CTM) plan to launch a protest march in downtown Hermosillo, Sonora, Jan. 21. The purpose of the action is to demand a reduction from 48 to 40-hour work week. Participants will gather at Plaza Emiliana De Zubeldia from 10:00 before marching to the State Congress.
Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence to the protest site to monitor the demonstration. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.
Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. Seek alternative routes to circumvent related transport disruptions and allow additional time to reach destinations. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
