Myanmar: Independence Day events to occur nationwide Jan. 4

Myanmar will celebrate its 76th Independence Day, a nationwide public holiday, Jan. 4. Flag-raising ceremonies were scheduled at Naypyidaw City Hall 02:00-08:00 and at Yangon People's Park from 04:00. Music festivals will take place at Yangon People's Park 18:00-22:00 and at National Monument Park in Pyin Oo Lwin City, Mandalay, 08:00-17:00. Authorities have announced the partial closure of Pyay Road through Jan. 4. Smaller, unannounced events will likely occur across urban centers, especially around public squares, near monuments, and along major thoroughfares. Government office and business closures are likely Jan. 4.

Anti-military activists may stage demonstrations at prominent roadways and parks and could clash with security personnel. Isolated attacks are possible, including in Naypyidaw and Yangon; past incidents have targeted the facilities of the military or people and organizations considered to be connected to the armed forces. Officials typically impose heightened security measures at rally sites or near any explosions.
