Portugal: Unionized rail staff start nationwide industrial action, Jan. 2, 4

Unionized rail staff to conduct strike across Portugal, Jan. 2, 4; rail service disruptions likely. Confirm services.

Warning

Unionized railway workers start a nationwide strike, Jan. 2. The strike will continue on Jan. 4, however authorities warn of related and consequent disruptions Jan. 3 and Jan. 5. Infraestruturas de Portugal (Portugal Infrastructure) staff, that cover operations, traffic management, and railway maintenance, are demanding improved working conditions and salaries. CP, Portugal's national rail operator, warns of significant disruption during the strike period.

Overcrowding is likely on available modes of public transport for the duration of the strike. Increased demand for private transport, including taxis and rental vehicles, is also likely. Traffic congestion will likely be heavier than usual as more commuters resort to using their cars rather than public transport. Residual delays are possible for some hours after the strike ends. Striking workers are likely to stage protests at transport hubs or rail-operating administrative buildings.

Consider alternative transport modes for time-sensitive travel and allow additional time for travel to destinations across Portugal, Jan. 2-5. Confirm taxi and rental car reservations.
