Slovenia: Healthcare workers to strike nationwide Jan. 9

Healthcare workers to strike across Slovenia 07:00-21:00 Jan. 9. Medical service disruptions likely; counter-protest planned in Ljubljana.

Warning

Healthcare workers affiliated with the Fides union plan to strike across Slovenia from 07:00-21:00 on Jan. 9. The purpose of the work stoppage is to demand improved salary guarantees. Organizers warn that participants will picket near their places of work. In response to the strike, activists have announced a protest at Preseren Square (Presernov Trg) in Ljubljana from 18:00. The purpose of the counter-protest is to denounce the medical strike. It is unclear how many participants may take part in the strike or counter-protest.

Medical service disruptions are likely nationwide. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all demonstrations, particularly the Preseren Square counter-protest. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or counter-protesters cannot be ruled out.

Reconfirm all medical appointments scheduled from Jan. 9. Avoid all demonstration areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Preseren Square. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
