Sri Lanka: Further health workers' strikes likely nationwide through late-January /update 1
Further health workers' strikes likely across Sri Lanka through late January. Medical service disruptions likely. Protests possible.
Unionized healthcare workers are likely to hold further strikes across Sri Lanka through late January to demand higher allowances. Related work stoppages since Jan. 9 have resulted in disruptions to non-emergency medical services at healthcare facilities. In response to the situation, authorities deployed around 615 soldiers to 25 hospitals nationwide to assist in non-medical support during the action.
The Paramedical Services Front (PSF) and other healthcare worker groups plan to hold the next nationwide strike on Jan. 16, with doctors abstaining from participation. Ambulance services may potentially be impacted as paramedic workers are joining the action. Organizers may prolong the strike at short notice; recurrent work stoppages are probable in the coming weeks.
Unless averted, the strike will likely affect nonemergency medical services at clinics and hospitals. Strike participants could protest during the action; demonstrations are most likely near government hospitals and buildings, including the Ministry of Health in Colombo. Authorities will likely increase security at any gatherings that occur. Localized business and transport disruptions are possible near any demonstration. While any protests will probably be peaceful, clashes between demonstrators and security personnel cannot be ruled out.
Confirm medical appointments and plan for medical service delays through late-January. If possible, contact healthcare facilities in advance for information about wait times, which could vary among hospitals and clinics. Avoid any demonstrations as a precaution. Plan for possible localized disruptions near any protest site.
