Sri Lanka: Unionized power sector workers plan to protest nationwide Jan. 3-5

Unionized power sector workers plan to protest across Sri Lanka Jan. 3-5. Localized disruptions possible at demonstration sites.

Informational

Members of the Unionized Electricity Workers' Union have called for a three-day protest Jan. 3-5 to denounce plans to restructure the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). Although organizers have not detailed the locations and times for the protests, demonstrations and street marches are possible at CEB offices and facilities, government buildings, public squares, and major roadways. Dozens to hundreds of workers may join each event; the largest gatherings are likely in major cities like Colombo. Participants may also engage in work stoppages as part of the protest, which could cause disruptions to power distribution.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Protesters may march along or block roadways with vehicles, causing localized transport disruptions.

Avoid the demonstrations. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Do not attempt to drive through protest roadblocks; wait for police to clear them before proceeding. If violence breaks out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe non-governmental building. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest activity as organizers may not announce details in advance. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
