Heightened tensions are likely in Abyei Region, a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, after communal clashes left at least 52 people and 64 injured Jan. 27. Attacks reportedly occurred in the Nyinkuac, Majbong, and Khadian areas. United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) also confirmed a peacekeeper died during an assault on a base in Agok. UNISFA is calling for an immediate investigation into the attacks.

Increased security measures are likely in the impacted areas in the coming days. Further violence can not be ruled out. Should any violence occur, officials could impose movement restrictions, including curfews.

Exercise caution if operating in Abyei Region. Travel only in convoy and during daylight hours. Heed the directives of authorities. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions.
