Adverse winter weather is forecast across parts of northern and eastern Turkiye through at least Jan. 28. Heavy snowfall is expected particularly across elevated parts of the western Black Sea Region from late Jan. 25 through Jan. 28. A mix of snow, sleet, and rainfall is expected in Southeastern Anatolia Region and heavy snowfall in Eastern Anatolia Region Jan. 26-27. Snowfall accumulations of 10-20 cm (4-8 inches) are possible across parts of the affected regions, with isolated heavier accumulations possible. Strong winds may combine with heavy snowfall to generate hazardous travel conditions due to reduced visibility caused by blowing snow. Icy and frosty conditions are also expected across the region.

The Turkish State Meteorological Service has issued the following weather warnings Jan. 25-26:

• Orange heavy snowfall warnings (the middle level on a three-tier scale): Bolu, Hakkari, and Sirnak provinces.

• Yellow heavy snowfall warnings: Across much of the rest of the affected area.

• Yellow heavy rainfall warnings: Adiyaman, Batman, Diyarbakir, and Mardin provinces.

• Yellow thunderstorm warnings: Gaziantep, Kilis, and Sanliurfa provinces.

Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

In addition to the wintry precipitation, strong wind gusts could lead to periods of blowing and drifting snow. Sporadic power outages are likely throughout the affected area.

The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions in the region over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are possible along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roadways in the affected states as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highways if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at airports in the region.
