Civil society groups to protests across Austria Feb. 25. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Civil society groups plan to protest in cities across Austria Feb. 25. The purpose of the action is to denounce what activists perceive as an increase in right-wing extremism and an attack on the country's democratic values. Organizers have announced the following protest start times and locations:

  • Klagenfurt: Stadttheater Klagenfurt at 17:30

  • Klosterneuburg: Town hall Square at 17:00

  • Vienna: Maria-Theresien Square at 16:00 and then Parliament at 18:00

  • Vocklabruck: Town Hall from 18:00

Demonstrations will reportedly occur in at least 29 cities with additional gatherings likely at various locations. For a complete list of protest locations, click here. Participation in the listed actions will likely vary significantly by location.

Heightened security is likely near all demonstrations. Road closures will probably prompt localized traffic disruptions. Counterprotests are possible, and scuffles between demonstrators and police or between supporters of rival political camps cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all demonstrations areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near a protest or on major roadways into affected cities. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
