A suspected drone attack targeted Goma International Airport (GOM) at approximately 02:00 Feb. 17. While there are conflicting reports concerning the details of the incident, sources within the DRC military assert that the attack was an attempt to strike air force planes stationed at the facility. There have been no reports of casualties or extensive damage; however, at least one SU-25 fighter aircraft sustained some damage. No group has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack and its origin remains unclear, with some sources assigning blame to rebels from the March 23 Movement (M23) and others pointing to the Rwandan armed forces.
Increased security is likely at the facility in the near term; some flight disruptions are possible until authorities determine that no further attacks are imminent.
Contact airlines to confirm flight status if booked to travel via GOM through at least Feb. 18; allow extra time to clear airport security and check-in. Strictly heed the instructions of security personnel.
