Informational

Guatemalan authorities are investigating the killing of a foreign national in Peten Department as of Feb. 27. Officials have confirmed that the body of a female discovered with multiple stab wounds in the municipality of San Francisco on Feb. 22 was that of missing 26-year-old Dora Guadalupe Quetzal Salas from Belize. Authorities have not confirmed any arrests, and the motive for the attack remains unclear at this time.

The incident does not indicate a broader increase in the threat of crime to foreign nationals in the country. However, violence against women and girls in Guatemala, including rape, femicide, child abuse, and other crimes, increased by 4.2 percent in 2023, according to the Prosecutor's Office.
