Malta: Farmers to conduct convoy protest in Malta Feb. 2

Farmers to lead vehicle protest from Ta' Qali to Triq Sarria in Floriana, Malta, Feb. 2. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Farmers plan to conduct a vehicular protest from Ta' Qali to Floriana on Feb. 2 to denounce EU-wide agricultural reforms. The action comes after weeks of similar demonstrations across other EU countries. Participants aim to gather with tractors and non-farming vehicles near the Pitkali Vegetable Market in Ta' Qali before departing for Triq Sarria in Floriana at 11:30; organizers aim to complete the journey by 13:00. Organizers did not disclose a specific convoy route; however, participants will pass through Attard, Mosta, Lija, Birkirkara, Msida, and Pieta'. It was not immediately clear how many participants may attend.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely along the convoy route, particularly at the start and end points. Participants may rally on Triq Sarria through the afternoon. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the gathering point in Ta' Qali, Triq Sarria in Floriana, or along the convoy route. Allow additional time if traveling to the US Embassy in Ta' Qali. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
