Mexico: Activists plan to stage protests in Oaxaca State Feb. 20

Activists plan to stage protests in Oaxaca State from 09:00 on Feb. 20. Participants plan to block main roads and highways.

Warning

Unionized teachers affiliated with the National Coordinator of Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion, CNTE) plan to stage multiple protests in Oaxaca State on Feb. 20. Participants demanding improved working conditions and pay plan to block several roads and highways from 09:00, including the following:

  • Federal Highway 175: Gathering near Oaxaca International Airport (OAX)

  • Federal Highway 185 (Carretera Transistmica): Gatherings near the municipalities of Salina Cruz, Juchitan de Zaragoza, and Matias Romero.

  • Federal Highway 190 (Carretera Panamericana): Ostuta Bridge in Santo Domingo Zanatepec and El Caracol in Tehuantepec.

Gatherings will likely occur along main thoroughfares and outside government buildings in other locations across Oaxaca State, including Oaxaca City, Etla, Tlacolula, and Ocotlan. Heightened security is likely around protest sites. Significant ground transport disruptions are probable in affected areas. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all protests as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks; plan alternative routes and allow additional time for journeys through affected areas. Heed all official directives. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any security disturbance.
