Mexico: Activists stage demonstration in front of Municipal Palace in Puebla Feb. 29

Activists protest near Municipal Palace in Puebla, Mexico, Feb. 29 to demand improved services; road closures, heightened security reported.

Warning

Activists affiliated with Antorcha Campesina have gathered to protest in front of the Municipal Palace in Puebla Feb. 29. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand improved public works and services in the southern parts of the city. Protest-related road closures have been reported in the area, including on Avenida Reforma from Calle 11 Norte/Sur toward the Historic Center (Centro historico) of Puebla, where the Municipal Palace is located. Police have reportedly deployed to the protest area.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the affected area until the demonstration ends. Localized traffic disruptions will likely impact locations subject to protest activity and increased security. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, especially if the activists attempt to enter the Municipal Palace or police attempt to forcibly disperse the demonstrators.

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Seek alternative routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions and allow additional time to reach destinations. Do not attempt to navigate around roadblocks set up by protesters; allow police to dismantle them before proceeding. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
