A shootout between Mexican security forces and members of a drug trafficking organization (DTO) in Miguel Aleman, Tamaulipas State, Feb. 18 killed 12 suspected criminals. Mexican soldiers were patrolling the area, near the border with Texas State, US, when a group of armed criminals ambushed them at approximately 14:00 opening fire on them; government forces returned fire and killed the DTO members.

Miguel Aleman is approximately 82 km (51 miles) west-northwest of Reynosa Tamaulipas.

Tamaulipas, particularly Miguel Aleman, is heavily affected by DTO activity. On September 9, 2023, a shootout occurred on the bridge between Miguel Aleman and Roma, Texas; several US nationals were caught in the crossfire and wounded. On July 19, 2023, investigators discovered the bodies of 27 people in nearby Reynosa; it is almost certain that DTOs enacted this violence.

The main DTOs in the area are the Northeast Cartel (Cartel del Noreste, CDN) and the Gulf Cartel (Cartel del Golfo, CDG).
