Spain: Unionized educators demonstrating and striking in Madrid through Feb. 29

Unionized public school teachers protesting, striking in Madrid, Spain, through Feb. 29. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized public school teachers in Madrid are conducting a series of protests and an associated strike through Feb. 29. The purpose of the actions is to demand higher salaries and a reduction in teaching hours. Protest organizers have announced the following demonstrations:

  1. Feb. 27: Protest march from Neptune Fountain to Cibeles Fountain and then to Puerta del Sol from 18:00.

  2. Feb. 28 and 29: Pickets at educational institutions 07:45-09:30.

  3. Feb. 29: Demonstration at Puerta del Sol from 18:00.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all demonstrations. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any protest sites, particularly the Feb. 27 march route and Puerta del Sol on the evening of Feb. 29. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
