Sri Lanka: Unionized healthcare workers to resume nationwide work stoppage from 06:30 Feb. 13 /update 2

Healthcare workers to resume labor action in Sri Lanka from 06:30 Feb. 13. Medical service disruptions likely.

Informational

Unionized healthcare workers in Sri Lanka will resume their indefinite labor strike from 06:30 on Feb. 13. Around 72 unions have commenced a series of intermittent strike campaigns since Jan. 9 to demand higher allowances. This strike comes after failed talks between labor leaders and Finance Ministry officials commenced on Feb. 3. Ambulance services may potentially be impacted if paramedic workers join the action. Organizers may suspend the strike on short notice.

Unless averted, the strike will likely affect nonemergency medical services at clinics and hospitals. Strike participants could protest during the action; demonstrations are most likely near government hospitals and buildings, including the Ministry of Health in Colombo. Authorities will likely increase security at any gatherings that occur. Localized business and transport disruptions are possible near any demonstration. While any protests will probably be peaceful, clashes between demonstrators and security personnel cannot be ruled out.

Confirm medical appointments and plan for medical service delays through late February. If possible, contact healthcare facilities in advance for information about wait times, which could vary among hospitals and clinics. Avoid any demonstrations as a precaution. Plan for possible localized disruptions near any protest site.
