Sudan, South Sudan: UN forces increase security in Abyei Region Feb. 5 following recent attacks
UN forces increase patrols in Abyei Region, disputed by Sudan and South Sudan, Feb. 5 following violent attacks that left 37 people dead.
The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in Abyei Region, a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, is increasing ground and aerial patrols from Feb. 5 following a recent outbreak of intercommunal violence in the area. Between Feb. 3-4, a series of attacks left at least 37 people dead and another 17 injured. According to UNISFA, armed assailants targeted civilians in Malual Aleu, Banton, Awolnhom, Abathok, Majbong, Awal, and East of Rumamier, burning homes and stealing cattle. Gunmen also ambushed a UNISFA convoy and a base in Marial Achak.
Further attacks are possible over the coming weeks. Officials could impose movement restrictions, including curfews, if the violence escalates.
Exercise caution if operating in Abyei Region. Travel only in convoy and during daylight hours. Heed the directives of authorities. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions.
On Jan. 27 communal clashes left at least 52 people and 64 injured.
