Informational

Further protests are possible over the coming weeks in Mubji-Mayi, Kasai-Oriental Province, as of March 5, as political tensions remain high in the province. Multiple demonstrations broke out in Mubji-Mayi in recent days to denounce the selection of Jean-Paul Mbwebwa and Augustin Kayemba as the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) ticket for Kasai-Oriental governor. Protesters burned tires and blocked roads on March 4, and marches occurred March 3. Activists claim that UDPS leaders failed to consult with party members on the ticket and the selection does not represent the will of the party base.

A heightened security presence and localized disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible. Further protests may occur over the coming weeks leading up to the scheduled April 7 election.

Avoid all protests. Plan for road travel delays near gathering sites. Do not drive through roadblocks. Wait for the police to clear them. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations. Heed instructions from authorities.
