Guatemala: Emergency Situation declared in the national electrical system, March 18

Officials declare Emergency Situation in the national electrical system in Guatemala, March 18. Power supply disruptions possible.

Informational

The Ministry of Energy and Mines declared the national electrical system to be in an Emergency Situation on March 18. The declaration was made in response to reduced rainfall and low dam water levels. The low water levels could potentially impact hydroelectric systems. The emergency is in effect through May 31 and provides a mechanism for authorities to guarantee power supply through various measures.

Power supply outages are possible over the near term if water levels drop further or if corrective policies and measures fail to be introduced timeously.

Develop or review business continuity plan (BCP) sections regarding utility outages. Identify business-critical functions that require a power supply. Regularly power laptops, tablets, mobile phones, and other business or travel-critical appliances. Download available warning apps covering planned or unplanned power outages and monitor announcements from local officials.
