Mumps is a contagious viral disease spread through respiratory droplets created when an infected individual coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Infected individuals can also expose people around them by contaminating surfaces with secretions from the nose, mouth, and throat. Symptoms typically appear 16-18 days after exposure, but can develop up to 25 days after exposure. Symptoms generally include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and a characteristic swelling of the cheeks and jaw caused by swollen salivary glands. In rare cases, complications can lead to deafness or infertility.
