Magnitude-6.4 earthquake occurs in the Java Sea off central Indonesia at around 15:53 March 22. No immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Warning

A magnitude-6.4 earthquake occurred in the Java Sea at around 15:53 March 24. The epicenter was about 112 km (69 miles) north of Paciran, East Java Province. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 8 km (5 miles), and strong shaking was probably felt on Bawean Island, located near the epicenter, as well as light shaking throughout much of East Java and parts of central and eastern Central Java, Yogyakarta, far southern Central Kalimantan provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, some damage is possible on Bawean Island. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Moderate aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The event has not prompted a regionwide tsunami warning, although minor sea level fluctuations are possible in coastal areas close to the epicenter.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides. Out of an abundance of caution, consider moving away from low-lying coastal areas until local authorities determine that no local tsunami threat exists.
