South America: Women's rights rallies planned in several countries throughout the region on March 8
Women's rights demonstrations to take place in several South American countries March 8; increased security, associated disruptions likely.
Women's rights activists plan to demonstrate in multiple cities across South America on March 8 as part of the International Women's Day commemoration. While participation will probably vary significantly by location, the events planned for the following locations and times will probably draw the largest crowds:
Buenos Aires, Argentina: Rally at Plaza de los Dos Congresos, 16:00
Brasilia, Brazil: Rally and cultural events at Praca Zumbi dos Palmares starting at 16:00
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: March from Candelaria to Cinelandia along Avenida Rio Branco, 16:00
Sao Paulo, Brazil: March from Espaco Cultural Leila Abramo to Museo de Arte Sao Paulo (MAPS), 14:00
Salvador, Brazil: March from Campo Grande to Praca Castro Alves, 13:00
Antofagasta. Chile: Rally at Parque Brasil, 18:00
Santiago, Chile: March from Plaza Baquedano (also known as Plaza Italia) to Monumento a las Mujeres Victimas de la Represion, in Plaza los Heroes, 18:00
Valparaiso, Chile: Rallies at Plaza Sotomayor, 11:00, and Plaza Victoria, 18:00
Asuncion, Paraguay: March from Plaza Uruguaya to Plaza de la Democracia, 17:00
Montevideo, Uruguay: March from Plaza Independencia along Avenida 18 de Julio, 16:00
Related demonstrations are also likely in locations elsewhere across the region. The largest gatherings could draw tens of thousands of participants. Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely around all demonstrations. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations in impacted cities March 8. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
