Spain: Activists to demonstrate at Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles on March 9

Opposition activists to protest at Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid, Spain, from 12:00 March 9. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Opposition activists plan to protest at Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid from 12:00 March 9. The purpose of the demonstration is to call for the resignation of President Pedro Sanchez. It is unclear how many participants may attend; however, previous rallies over the same issue have drawn very large crowds.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration site. Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the demonstration area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near Plaza de Cibeles on March 9. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.

The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) announced on Nov. 9 that it had reached a deal to form a government in exchange for granting amnesty to organizers of the 2017 Catalonian Independence Referendum. Demonstrators subsequently gathered in cities across the country for several weeks to protest negotiations between the PSOE and the Catalonian Junts party concerning a possible amnesty agreement for referendum organizers. Law enforcement officers forcibly dispersed demonstrators during a Nov. 7 rally in Madrid. The largest such demonstration, a Nov. 18 gathering in Madrid, drew an estimated 170,000 participants.
