Spain: Farmers plan to hold tractor protest in Madrid March 17

Farmers plan to stage tractor protest through central Madrid, Spain, March 17. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Farmers affiliated with the Union of Farmers and Livestock Unions (Union de Uniones de Agricultores y Ganaderos) plan to conduct a tractor protest through central Madrid on March 17. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce EU-level agricultural policies, and it coincides with a wider farmers' protest movement across the EU. Participants will gather at the Ministry for Ecological Transition on Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz from 10:30 before departing at 11:00 and arriving at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food on Plaza de la Infanta Isabel at 13:30. At least 10,000 participants and 1,500 tractors are expected to take part in the march.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely along the demonstration route throughout the day. Sporadic roadway disruptions around Madrid are possible between the nights of March 16-17 and 17-18 as participants drive tractors into and out of Madrid. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists, potentially escalating to clashes, cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the demonstration route as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Madrid on March 17. Be prepared for potential short-term roadway disruptions in any part of Madrid between the evening of March 16 and the early morning hours of March 18. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
