Spain: Police and Civil Guard protesting in Madrid March 16

Police and Civil Guard protesting, marching through central Madrid, Spain, March 16. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Police and Civil Guard affiliated with the Platform for a Dignified Retirement (Plataforma por la Jubilación Digna) are protesting in central Madrid on March 16. Participants gathered at Plaza de Espana at 12:00 and will proceed down Gran Via and Calle Preciados to Puerta del Sol, before taking Calle Carrera de San Jeronimo to the protest's end point at Plaza de las Cortes. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand improved working rights, such as recognition as a hazardous profession and "full equality" with regional Spanish police forces in terms of pay and retirement benefits. Police and Civil Guard from throughout Spain are taking part, with participation likely in the low thousands.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely along the demonstration route throughout the day. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers are unlikely but cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the demonstration route as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Madrid on March 16. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
