Gambia: Ferry service suspended indefinitely on the Banjul-Barra route as of April 15 /update 1
Ferry service suspended indefinitely on the Banjul-Barra route, Gambia, as of April 15.
Ferry services between Banjul and Barra are suspended indefinitely as of April 15 following a recent mechanical breakdown on the vessel Kanilai. The Kanilai had been the only ferry providing services on the route since early March as the vessel Kunta Kinteh undergoes scheduled maintenance. National operator Gambia Ferry Services (GFS) officials are advising travelers and freight truck operators to use the Senegambia Bridge to transit the River Gambie until ferry service resumes; the bridge is located along the N4 (Trans-Gambia Highway), about 114 km (71 miles) east of Banjul.
Travel and freight transport delays are likely for the duration of the ferry service suspension due to the distance involved in use of the recommended alternative route.
Reconfirm ferry travel arrangements across the River Gambie until the planned vessel maintenance work is completed. Plan accordingly for potential cross-river travel and shipping delays.
