Greece: Air traffic controllers to conduct nationwide strike April 9

Unionized air traffic control personnel to strike across Greece from 08:00-12:00 April 9. Air travel disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized air traffic control (ATC) personnel affiliated with the Air Traffic Controllers Association of Greece (EEEKE) plan to strike nationwide from 08:00-12:00 April 9. The purpose of the work stoppage is to denounce the death of an ATC worker while on duty and to demand improved working conditions.

Unless averted, the work stoppage will likely cause air traffic disruptions, including flight cancellations and delays across Greece. Disruptions may linger through the end of the day as operators reposition aircraft and work through passenger backlogs. Picket protests are possible at airports; heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any such demonstrations. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated travelers cannot be ruled out.

Reconfirm all air travel planned in Greece through at least the evening of April 9. Consider alternative travel arrangements for time-sensitive travel. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Avoid any demonstration that materializes as a standard precaution. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
