Kuwait: National Assembly elections scheduled to take place nationwide April 4

National Assembly elections to take place in Kuwait April 4. Increased security, some protest activity possible.

Informational

Kuwait is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections on April 4. Tribal groups and opposition activists may hold election rallies, including at Irada Square in front of Kuwait's National Assembly. While those gatherings remain officially banned by Kuwaiti authorities, election-related protests are likely to be peaceful. Additionally, Bidoon (stateless) activists could demonstrate in an attempt to increase their visibility during the election period; a possible gathering area is Al Jahra. As Kuwaiti authorities consider these protests illegal, they are more likely to be forcibly dispersed.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near polling locations and other election-related institutions.

Avoid all election-related events as a precaution. Monitor local developments. Heed the advisories of authorities.

On Feb. 15, 2024, Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad dissolved the Parliament after a dispute over comments made in the National Assembly that were considered insulting to the ruler. The National Assembly was elected in June 2023 amid extended political tensions.

Kuwait's political system is fractious, and near-constant hostility between the executive and the elected legislature has contributed to long-term government instability. While some protests have erupted in previous years to demand electoral reforms, parliamentary elections are usually peaceful.
