Myanmar: Anti-junta forces take responsibility for drone attack in Naypyidaw April 11

Drone strike occured at military airbase in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, 04:50 April 11. Increased security likely; casualties possible.

Warning

The Brave Warriors for Myanmar (BWM) has taken responsibility for a drone strike in Myanmar April 11. According to local media reports, the attack targeted Aye Lar military airbase near Naypyidaw International Airport (NYT) at 04:50 April 11. A BWN official claimed that five military personnel and 12 civilians were killed, and another 12 were injured during the attack. The military has yet to confirm the casualty count.

Authorities will likely bolster security in Naypyidaw, especially at NYT, in the coming days. Enhanced security measures such as foot and vehicle patrols, random stop checks, and vehicle inspections are likely, which may prompt transport and business disruptions. Increased security could cause screening delays at NYT. Additional attacks could follow in the coming days.

Exercise caution if traveling in Naypyidaw. Carry proper identification documents and remain cooperative if stopped by officials for security checks. Do not try to go around roadblocks; wait for authorities to clear them. Confirm flights at NYT and plan for possible screening delays. Heed all official transport and security advisories.

This drone strike is the second attack on Aye Lar military airbase in a week, following a drone strike by the People's Defense Force (PDF) on April 4. Explosions continue to occur in major cities of Myanmar amid ongoing civil unrest following the 2021 military coup. Most incidents target security forces, government offices, or individuals and organizations supporting the military. Additional blasts and demonstrations could increase in frequency over the coming months as the Tatmadaw ramps up the mandatory military conscription program.
