Pakistan: Opposition rallies likely to continue nationwide through at least mid-May /update 11
Political protests to continue across Pakistan through at least mid-May; increased security, localized disruptions likely.
The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party will continue nationwide rallies through at least mid-May. Supporters are denouncing alleged irregularities during the Feb. 8 general elections and April 21 by-elections, as well as demanding the release of imprisoned PTI chief Imran Khan. Upcoming events include protests across Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh provinces from 14:00 April 26; gatherings will occur in each urban constituency and rural administrative unit (tehsil). Future rallies will occur in Faisalabad on an unspecified date, and at Karachi's Bagh-e-Jinnah park May 5. Organizers may call off or modify plans at short notice if police refuse permission.
Further demonstrations, such as marches, sit-ins, and shutdown strikes, are likely over the coming days; other opposition parties may also hold rallies. Potential protest sites include prominent political party offices, government buildings, police stations, public squares, sports fields, press clubs, and thoroughfares. Khan's supporters may also gather near courthouses in Islamabad during his hearings. Larger rallies could draw tens of thousands of attendees; such events are likely on significant anniversaries such as May 9, when police arrested Khan under various charges that led to unrest across the country in 2023.
