Pakistan: Political rallies likely to continue nationwide through at least mid-May /update 10

Opposition party likely to stage rallies across Pakistan through at least mid-May; increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party will continue nationwide rallies through at least mid-May. Supporters denounce alleged irregularities during the Feb. 8 general elections and demand the release of imprisoned PTI chief Imran Khan. Upcoming events include a march from Diamond City to the Karachi Administration Employees Housing Society in Karachi from 21:30 April 5 and a gathering at Islamabad's Shakarparian Parade Ground from 22:00 April 6. Another rally will take place at Karachi's Bagh-e-Jinnah park April 28. Organizers may call off or modify plans at short notice if police refuse permission.

Further demonstrations, such as marches, sit-ins, and shutdown strikes, are likely over the coming days; other opposition parties may also hold rallies. Potential protest sites include prominent political party offices, government buildings, police stations, public squares, sports fields, press clubs, and thoroughfares. Khan's supporters may also gather near courthouses in Islamabad during his hearings. Larger rallies could draw hundreds of thousands of attendees; such events are likely on significant anniversaries such as April 9, when Khan was ousted as prime minister after losing a trust motion in 2022, and May 9, when Khan was arrested under various charges leading to unrest across the country in 2023.

Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely near rally sites. Demonstrators may clash with rival party supporters and/or police. Officials may temporarily impose localized curbs on telecommunications, internet services, and public movement if significant violence breaks out. Localized business disruptions are possible, especially during shutdown strikes or large gatherings.

Avoid demonstrations and navigating protester roadblocks due to the threat of violence. If clashes occur, immediately leave the area or seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Plan for travel delays and potential business disruptions near rally sites. Monitor trusted media for updates on protest details as organizers may not announce revised plans in advance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Carry valid identification and heed all traffic and security advisories.
