Poland: Taxi drivers to strike and demonstrate in Warsaw on April 4. Associated protest planned for April 5 /update 1

Taxi drivers to strike and protest at Palace of Culture in Warsaw on April 4 and at Warsaw Chopin Airport on April 5.

Warning

Taxi drivers plan to strike and hold related protests in Warsaw on April 4 and 5. The purpose of the action is to demand higher rates. Striking taxi drivers will have an associated protest at the Palace of Culture and Science on Plac Defilad from 09:00-15:30 on April 4; the strike's duration is unclear. On April 5, participants will conduct a protest march near Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) between 12:00-15:00. They will also occupy the pedestrian bridge at the intersection of James Gordon Bennetta, Wanda Modlibowska, and Wiktora Narkiewicza streets near WAW.

Officials have announced detours for buses 148, 175, 188, and 331 during the demonstration. It is unclear how many participants may attend; however, 500 drivers participated in a related protest in central Warsaw on March 27. It is unclear how long the strike may last.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration sites. Demonstrators may block traffic at the intersection of James Gordon Bennetta, Wanda Modlibowska, and Wiktora Narkiewicza streets on April 5. Law enforcement officers may block traffic on streets near the demonstration sites. Confrontations between protesters, law enforcement officers, or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid protest areas as a standard precaution. If traveling near the Palace of Culture and Science on April 4, allow additional time. Consider alternate routes to reach WAW in the late morning and afternoon of April 5 to avoid the demonstration. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
