Belgium: Transport personnel to strike nationwide, protest in several cities June 3
Unionized transport workers to strike across Belgium, protest in five cities June 3. Transport disruptions likely.
Unionized transport workers affiliated with the General Labor Federation of Belgium (FGTB) plan to strike across Belgium and protest in five cities on June 3. The purpose of the labor action is to denounce EU budgetary rules. Employees of Operateur de Transport de Wallonie (TEC) and De Lijn, the primary public transport operators of Wallonia and Flanders, respectively, plan to participate. However, operations of the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (STIB) are not expected to be impacted. Organizers are also planning the following demonstrations:
Brussels: Protest at Place Jean Rey/Jean Reyplein 09:00-12:00.
Liege: Protest at Place Saint-Paul 11:00.
Mons: Protest march from Mons Railway Station (Gare de Mons) to Grand Place from 10:30, with a rally from 11:00.
Namur: Protest march and "surprise" action" near the Citadel and in the city center in the morning hours.
Verviers: Protest march from Verviers-Central Railway Station (Gare de Verviers-Central) via the Palace of Justice (Palais de Justice) to the City Hall (Hotel de ville) from 10:00.
Disruptions to public transport services offered by TEC and De Lijn are likely nationwide. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all protest sites. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Reconfirm planned transport via TEC and De Lijn on June 3. Allow additional time for travel via TEC and De Lijn. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near demonstration sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
