Warning

Egyptian police have launched an investigation into the May 7 killing of an Israeli businessman in the port city of Alexandria. Preliminary information indicates that the individual in question, who reportedly also held Canadian and Russian citizenship, was killed by unknown gunmen in an affluent area of the city. A group calling itself the Vanguards of Liberation, which may have ties to Palestinian militant organizations, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are likely around the scene of the killing. Authorities could also tighten security near tourist sites in the surrounding area over the coming days.

A similar incident occurred on Oct. 8, 2023, when an Egyptian policeman opened fire on a group of tourists near Pompey's Pillar in Alexandria's Sawari District, killing two Israeli nationals and their local tour guide.

The May 7 incident comes the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip. Tensions have been particularly high since Israel launched its military operation in Gaza's southernmost city of Rafah on May 6.
