Fiji: Tight security reported in Suva, as of May 9, due to sentencing of former prime minister

Authorities boost security in Suva, Fiji, as of May 9 due to high-profile sentencing. Protests, disruptions, and skirmishes possible.

Informational

Authorities have heightened security across Suva as of May 9 due to the conviction of former Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama. The High Court of Fiji sentenced him to one-year imprisonment for allegedly interfering with a corruption investigation related to the funding of a university in 2019. Bainimarama's supporters and his FijiFirst party members may hold solidarity rallies, with the largest demonstrations most likely in Suva. Minor clashes are possible, especially if rival party supporters clash or police attempt to prevent gatherings.

Traffic restrictions, including road closures and diversions, are likely in the vicinity of the High Court of Fiji and Supreme Court buildings, as well as the Korovou Prison, where Bainimarama will be. Additional measures, such as vehicular and pedestrian checks, are possible. Officials may also impose bans on unauthorized gatherings.

Activists may hold disruptive protests in the coming days, especially in the lead-up to any legal appeal in the Supreme Court; popular protest venues include public parks like Albert Park, political party offices, government and court buildings, and major roadways. Transport disruptions are possible if demonstrators march on or block roadways. Clashes and/or tight security measures may prompt additional localized transport and/or business disruptions.

Avoid any protests or navigating protester roadblocks due to possible violence. Exercise caution if operating in or near court buildings. Leave for a secure, nongovernmental building if clashes occur. Plan for possible localized business and transport disruptions. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Monitor trusted local media for protest plans, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
