Greece: Activist groups plan rival demonstrations in Thessaloniki May 7

Activists to hold opposing demonstrations in central Thessaloniki, Greece, May 7. Heightened security likely.

Warning

Activists from opposing groups plan to demonstrate in central Thessaloniki on May 7. Preliminary reports indicate that members of a nationalist group will rally at the White Tower along the city's waterfront; organizers have as yet released no start time or other details concerning the event. Antifascist activists, on the other hand, will stage a counter-demonstration at Navarinou Square (Plateia Navarinou) near Tsimiski Street located about 300 meters (330 yards) north of the White Tower starting at 11:00.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration sites. Confrontations between the two groups or between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, potentially escalating to clashes, cannot be ruled out. Authorities may attempt to disperse the gatherings if they deem them to be overly disruptive.

Avoid the area near the White Tower and Navarinou Square May 7. Allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
