Greece: Pro-Palestine activists to demonstrate in Athens, Heraklion, and Thessaloniki starting the evening of May 13
Pro-Palestine activists to rally in Athens, Heraklion, and Thessaloniki, Greece, May 13-14. Localized disruptions likely.
Activists affiliated with several labor organizations, student unions, and teachers associations plan to rally in several cities across Greece starting during the evening of May 13. The purpose of the action is to show solidarity with Palestine and condemn NATO's support for Israel. Organizers have scheduled the following specific gatherings:
Athens: At the Athens University Propylaea starting at 20:00
Heraklion: At Lion Square starting at 20:00
Thessaloniki: At the White Tower starting at 19:00
The demonstrations in Athens and Thessaloniki with run through the night and into at least the morning hours of May 14; these events will probably draw large crowds since they have the support of the All-Workers Militant Front (Panergatiko Agonistiko Metoro, PAME), a large labor confederation. It remains unclear how long the protest in Heraklion will run or how many participants it may draw.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence near all three of the announced gatherings as a precaution. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Clashes between police officers and demonstrators, or other forms of low-level violence cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the announced protest sites as a standard security precaution. Allow extra time to reach nearby destinations through at least the morning commute of May 14. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
