India, Nepal: Authorities to suspend cross-border transit between Uttar Pradesh State and Kailali District through at least May 13

Authorities have closed the border between Uttar Pradesh State in India and Nepal's Kailali District through May 13 as a routine precaution ahead of elections in the Kheri District of Uttar Pradesh. The closure was implemented late May 12 due to elections in Kheri on May 13.

An increased security presence and heightened vigilance will likely be exercised on both sides of the border. Disruptions to cross-border freight and passenger traffic could extend for several days after the closure is lifted as transport companies and customs officials clear their backlogs.
