Niger: Authorities prohibit non-escorted vehicles in Diffa Region indefinitely following armed attack as of May 31
Authorities banned all non-escorted vehicles indefinitely on the Maine Soroa-Diffa route, Niger, May 29 following an attack.
Provincial authorities have indefinitely banned all non-escorted all-terrain 4x4 vehicles on the Maine Soroa-Diffa route in Diffa Region as of May 31. The measure was enacted following an armed attack against a humanitarian aid vehicle, killing three humanitarian aid workers and a Nigerien soldier by suspected jihadist militants on May 28. The measure applies to all government, non-government organizations, private entities, and individuals until further notice. A military security escort is required. While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) is suspected.
Heightened security is likely along the Niger-Nigerian frontier due to ongoing insecurity. Attacks by militants and bandits targeting public transport and private vehicles are possible, as are localized transport and business disruptions in areas where security has been reinforced.
Exercise heightened vigilance if operating along the Niger-Nigeria border regions. Heed the instructions of local authorities; remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation or business security team while operating in the area.
