Norway: Union threatens airport staff strike at Oslo and Bergen airports beginning May 27

Union threatens to launch airport staff strike at Oslo and Bergen airports, Norway, May 27; flight disruptions likely if strike proceeds.

Informational

Unionized airport staff at Oslo Airport (OSL) and Bergen Airport (BGO) may stage a strike at each facility from May 27 if the United Federation of Trade Unions (Fellesforbundet) and Federation of Norwegian Aviation Industries (NHO Luftfart) fail to ratify a collective bargaining agreement by 23:59 May 26. The most significant points of disagreement in the negotiations between the sides reportedly involve stipulations over sick pay and pensions. The United Federation of Trade Unions has signaled that some 447 employees could participate in the work stoppage if it goes ahead, including 364 workers at OSL and 83 others at BGO.

The strike may commence at OSL and BGO with little-to-no advance notice on May 27 if the sides fail to reach an agreement by late May 26. Disruptions would likely affect airport operations and flight schedules at OSL and BGO if unionized airport staff proceed to launch the labor action. If the work stoppage goes ahead, participating airport staff could stage picket protests, including at or near OSL and BGO. Authorities would likely deploy a heightened security presence to the vicinities of any related demonstrations that materialize, and associated ground transport disruptions could not be ruled out.

Confirm flight reservations if scheduled to travel via OSL or BGO. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Allow additional time to travel to the airport and complete passenger processing procedures. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary.
