Cook Islands: Additional power disruptions possible nationwide as of June 29 due to technical faults

Further power disruptions caused by technical issues possible across Cook Islands as of June 29. Business interruptions may occur.

Informational

As of June 29, Te Aponga Uira—a company that provides nearly 90 percent of the Cook Islands' electricity—is responding to multiple technical problems. The issues prompted unplanned temporary power outages nightly June 26-28; each outage lasted a few hours, with Raratonga island worst affected. Although officials have assured the public that there are no supply shortages, they did not specify any timeline for the resolution of ongoing faults with solar cells and a cross-island cable.

Planned and unplanned territorywide power disruptions can impact business operations in the coming days. Companies without backup generators may suspend operations during any prolonged outages. Blackouts could also disrupt certain essential services such as municipal water distribution, ATMs, and fueling stations. Traffic disruptions are possible due to malfunctioning traffic signals.

Charge mobile and essential electrical devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Plan for ground transport delays due to possible malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights in affected areas. Exercise caution when driving in recently impacted areas. Park vehicles in secure areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working once power is restored. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices where necessary.
