Europe: Political parties to stage pre-election rallies in European Union member states, through early June

Political parties to stage rallies in cities across European Union member states, ahead of elections June 6-9. Increased security likely.

Informational

Political leaders will stage rallies across European Union (EU) member states through early June. Organizers will hold the gatherings ahead of the European elections June 6-9. Although attendance levels will vary by location, large crowds are likely in capital cities. For example, in Greece, thousands are likely to attend each of the political parties' rallies in Syntagma Square, Athens, June 4-7, and in recent days, tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Germany to denounce far-right parties. Further counter-protests are possible against any far-right rallies, for example in France, Hungary, Italy, and Spain. Far-right counter-protests are possible at other political events.

Other campaigning groups, including farmers' groups and climate activists, will likely stage protest events during the European election period to raise the profile of their demands.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy additional police to monitor the gatherings. Large crowds and related security measures could prompt localized disruptions, but widespread violence is not anticipated.

Avoid affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near main squares in capital cities. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
