Guatemala: Government extends Emergency Situation declared for potential power grid outages through June 30 /update 1

Guatemalan government extends Emergency Situation for electrical grid status through June 30. Power supply disruptions possible.

Informational

The Ministry of Energy and Mines has extended Guatemala's nationwide power grid-related Emergency Situation through June 30. The measure has been in place since March 18 due to reduced rainfall and low dam water levels, which could potentially impact hydroelectric systems; it was originally slated to expire on May 31. The emergency declaration provides additional mechanisms for authorities to ensure power supply delivery.

Sporadic power outages are possible across the country if dam water levels drop further; authorities could implement load shedding plans with rolling blackouts if the existing emergency declaration fails to meet operational needs.

Develop or review business continuity plan sections regarding utility outages. Identify business-critical functions that require a power supply. Regularly power laptops, tablets, mobile phones, and other business or travel-critical appliances. Download available warning apps covering planned or unplanned power outages and monitor announcements from local officials.
