India: Pro-Kannada group plans to rally at district headquarters across Karnataka State July 1

Activists to demonstrate at district headquarters across Karnataka State, India, July 1. Protest planned at Freedom Park in Bengaluru.

Warning

The pro-Kannada group Kannada Karnataka Rakshana Vedike plans to rally at district headquarters across Karnataka State July 1. Activists are calling for the state government to implement job reservations for native residents in both public and private sectors. In Bengaluru, activists will gather at Freedom Park from 11:00; other potential protest locations include the governor's residence (Raj Bhavan), Town Hall, and other prominent government buildings, as well as Mysore Bank Circle, and Vidhana Soudha. Participation levels will likely vary by locale, with the largest turnouts likely in major urban centers such as Bengaluru, Belagavi, Hubballi, Mangaluru, and Mysuru. Well-attended gatherings could draw hundreds of participants.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any gatherings that materialize and may move to disperse overly unruly crowds. Officials could implement an increased security posture near government buildings and in Tamil-dominated neighborhoods. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators could march along and/or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
