Poland: Civic Platform party to lead demonstration in central Warsaw June 4
Civic Platform party to lead demonstration in central Warsaw, Poland, June 4. Increased security, disruptions likely.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his Civic Coalition (KO) party will lead a major demonstration in Warsaw on June 4. The demonstration will commemorate the 35th anniversary of Poland's 1989 election, which saw the Communist Party voted out of power, and serve as an election rally for the KO ahead of the upcoming EU elections. Participants will gather in Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy) at 18:00 for a rally. Several thousand activists will likely attend the event; organizers state as many as ten thousand will take part. Attendees may march along streets in the area.
Additional police will be deployed to facilitate and monitor the gathering. Increased security measures, including road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt transport and business disruptions in the area; public transport services in the area could be canceled or diverted. The event is likely to be peaceful, but isolated skirmishes between participants and police cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all demonstrations as a general precaution. Heed instructions from security services. Check for transport disruptions and allow extra time for travel in Warsaw through June 4.
