Unionized educators to protest at zonal education offices across Sri Lanka from 14:00 June 12. Tight security, transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Educators from several groups, including the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), plan to protest at zonal education offices and GCE Ordinary Level examination paper marking centers across the nation from 14:00 June 12 to demand the resolution of salary discrepancies. While turnout remains unclear, organizers claim that teachers and principals from more than 30 organizations will participate in the demonstrations. At least 4,000 educators joined in previous related protests, with the largest gatherings in major cities such as Colombo.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely around protest sites. Although widespread violence is unlikely, isolated clashes are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse gatherings. Security personnel have used batons, tear gas, and water cannons to control previous well-attended rallies.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest plans as organizers may change details at short notice. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
