Sri Lanka: Postal workers plan nationwide strike June 13

Postal workers plan nationwide strike in Sri Lanka June 13. Mail delivery delays likely, associated protests possible.

Informational

Sri Lankan postal workers part of the United Postal Trade Unions Front (UPTUF) will hold a 24-hour nationwide strike on June 13. This is to raise awareness over the alleged failure from the government to fill over 6,000 vacant positions in the postal service. Union leaders claim that 21,000 members will participate in the strike. The action may extend beyond June 13 or recur in the coming weeks if officials fail to address the workers' concerns.

Striking workers could demonstrate at post offices, prominent roadways, and monuments in urban centers such as Colombo. Dozens of people may participate in related events. Police will likely monitor any protests and may try to disperse disruptive gatherings. Localized traffic disruptions are possible near protest sites.

Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest locations as organizers may not announce them in advance. Follow all security personnel instructions. Consider alternatives to postal delivery services for critical shipments and correspondence until the strike ends and operations return to normal.
